Matson Navigation Company, Inc. is, and has been, focused on the preservation of the environment and the health of the communities in the ports our vessels serve. Matson vessels transit some of the most environmentally sensitive areas in the United States including the Hawaiian Islands, the coast of California, and the Puget Sound. These areas derive a great deal of their livelihood from the maritime environment, either from tourism, transportation, or fishing. Matson acknowledges and embraces our responsibility as a steward of these areas, and ensures the inclusion of environmental considerations in all of our planning. Matson is proud to have twice been awarded the U. S. Coast Guard’s prestigious William M. Benkert Award for Environmental Excellence. Other honors include:

Part of our commitment to the environment includes fostering a company-wide ethic of sustainability. All employees (both ashore and afloat) are trained in Matson’s Environmental Policy and this policy is put into action and modified to reach the goals of conservation through recycling, reducing waste, and re-using whenever and wherever possible. A few examples of our efforts include:

Shoreside and offshore employees reading electronic documents versus printing.
Use of recycling bins placed conveniently throughout Matson facilities.
Encouraging employees to carpool to and from work.

Matson further contributes to the environment by testing and deploying cutting edge technologies which are applied to its modernized fleet. Either on our own or with partners, Matson designs, retrofits, and troubleshoots new technologies that maximize efficiency, improve air and water quality, and prevent oil spills, all at great expense to the company. Matson’s engineering department strives to design ships and systems that maximize fuel efficiency and reduce emissions through innovations. The department is currently working on extensive retrofits to the fleet to allow utilization of alternative marine power and low sulfur fuels to minimize vessel air emissions. In addition, Matson has already installed and tested two different ballast water treatment systems and designed our newer vessels to utilize fresh water ballast. The entire diesel fleet has been retrofitted with state of the art oil water separators equipped with tamper proof monitoring equipment.

Matson is a proud member of BSR’s Clean Cargo Working Group which is a global business-to-business initiative made up of leading cargo carriers and their customers, dedicated to environmental performance improvement in marine container transport through measurement, evaluation, and reporting.
