History of Sacred Hearts
This Oahu Religious Community began during the French Revolution, a time when the practice of religion was forbidden and took place at very great personal risk. In May 1792, Frenchman Father Pierre Coudrin had been secretly apart of the priesthood and went into hiding for six months in an attic of the granary of the Motte d’Usseau. One evening, he had a vision of being surrounded by a heavenly group of missionaries dressed in white robes. It became his calling to establish a religious institute that would be the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Vowing to suffer everything, to give myself to God and to die if necessary. His service Fr. Coudrin left the granary and began his underground ministry in Poitiers, waiting for the right moment to start his group.
Imprisonment
In 1794, he met Henriette Aymer de Chevalerie. She had been in jail with her mother for hiding priests. While in prison, she experienced a change calling her to serve God. Together, the Good Father and the Good Mother envisioned a Community of men and women who would go everywhere. They would spread the message of God’s unconditional love, as manifested through the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
We, the vowed religious men of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, United States of America (US) Province commit ourselves to contemplate, live, and proclaim the love of God to the world, through the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. We accomplish this through:

In The Beginning
From this simple beginning, the Sacred Hearts established a secondary school and ten other parishes in Massachusetts. These eventually became parish communities. In 1946 the mission in the Hawaiian Islands formally became the Province of Hawaii and the following year missions on the mainland became the United States Province. Over the years, brothers were sent to establish missions in California, South Texas, Ireland, England, Japan, the Bahamas, and India. Finally, in 1970, the United States Province was subdivided into the Provinces of USA East, USA West, the quasi-province of Ireland England, and the Vice Province of Japan.
